Situated on a rocky slope at the confluence of the Sangro river with the Zittola, it is remembered for being the birthplace of the painter Theophilus Patini,as well as for its local football team, which has risen to the sports headlines for reaching even the national second division.

In antiquity Castel di Sangro was an important strategic centre controlling the so-called "Via degli Abruzzi", which contributed greatly to the development of the place. The town was largely destroyed in the Second World War. Recently have been found remains of prehistoric origin.
