Castelvecchio Subequo
Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy

The village is located in an area of great environmental interest, and rich in archeological findings of the pre-Roman, Roman and early Christian times, including Superaequum, the ancient capital of the Peligni Superequani, not yet the subject of extensive and systematic excavations.

History
Castelvecchio Subequo was also a Roman municipium, and in its vicinity (at Colle Moria) is an interesting underground cemetery dating from the late fourth century AD, an evidence of primitive Christianity in Abruzzo. In the eighteenth century the place still belonged to the Barberini family.
Sights & Excursions
- The church ofof San Francesco of Assisi, built in 1288, which underwent a major restoration in 1647, during which the façade was almost completely rebuilt, and contains many works of art, such as 16th-century reliquaries, frescoes by Giotto school and various goldsmith works.
- The Castle-Palace, hovering over the village, with an outstanding Gothic portal.
