Built on the site of ancient Corfinium Corfinium in a strategically important position (between the Peligna Valley and Fucino), in 91 BC during the Social War it was the capital of the Italic League against the Romans. To punish the rebellion, the Romans destroyed the town and renamed it "Pentima", a name that was changed only in 1928.
