Placed on a hill overlooking the Saline River valley, the town is a short distance from Pescara. Among its dominant landmarks is undoubtedly the Church of St. Michael, while the entire center is characterized by 18th-century brick houses.

It rose probablyon the site of the ancient Vestine city Angulus, but the earliest historical documents date back to the early 13th century. Destroyed by Emperor Frederick II in 1239, it was besieged in 1350 by the inhabitants of Penne and, again, sacked by the troops of Giacomo Piccinino in 1460. In 1807, moreover, was attacked by gangs of brigands: a legend says that on that occasion the attackers were chased away by the Virgin Mary, who appeared before them on the city walls. In 1814 the country rose up against the troops of Joachim Murat, with countless victims among the civilians.
