The town lies in a fairly flat area, at the confluence of the Lavino with the river Pescara. Thanks to local deposits of asphalt rock, whose exploitation began already in Roman times, Scafa has had a remarkable industrial development.

History
The village derives its name from the "scafa" (=boat) of San Valentini, because until the 19th century the site was used as a boat passage on the Pescara. Around 1870 the modern town began to form, right next to the wooden bridge that replaced the boats. Scafa became a separate municipality only in 1948, having previously belonged to the jurisdiction of San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore.
What to see
- the Parco Territoriale Attrezzato Sorgenti Sulfuree sul Lavino (Sulfurous Springs Territorial Park on the Lavino), with striking turquoise-blue waters, a color created by the presence of sulfates.
