The village rises in a domineering position on the valley of the river Tronto, and still maintains the appearance of a medieval citadel, surrounded by walls with two doors: the Porta da Monte and the Porta da Mare.

The origin of the village are to be found in the later Middle Ages. In 1557 it was sieged by the Duke of Alba and the walls were destroyed. Until 1818 it belonged to the Bishopry of Ascoli, within the State of the Church. Then in 1852 it passed to the kingdom of Naples and a few years later to Italy.
