Canzano, highly renownned as one of the temples of traditional Abruzzo cuisine (the "tacchino alla canzanese" is a highly renowned recipe), lies on a group of hills in the Northern Vomano valley, in a strategic position which explains the great importance of this nowadays small centre.

The territory was inhabited in pre-historic times, since neolythic arrows have been found in the vicinity. During the Iron Age it was a Praetutii and later a Roman settlement: there are remains of an Italic necropolis at Gerenzano and a Roman villa at Macera. In the XII century it belonged to the Normans, then in 1276 came under the power of the House of Acquaviva, and in the XVI of the Alarcon y Mendoza.
