JOHN FANTE: Cronologia

  • 8 aprile 1909 - John Fante nasce a Denver, Colorado da una famiglia di immigrati italiani: il padre Nick Fante originario di Torricella Peligna, era muratore; la madre Maria Antrilli, era nata a Chicago da genitori italiani. Ebbe un’infanzia povera.
  • John trascorre l’infanzia e la giovinezza a Boulder - frequenta scuole cattoliche e l’Università del Colorado.
  • 1932- si trasferisce a Los Angeles e svolge lavori di ogni genere. Viene pubblicato un suo racconto su The American Mercury .
  • 1937 - John sposa Joyce Smart, da cui avrà quattro figli. Inizia a lavorare per Hollywood.
  • 1938 - Pubblica il primo romanzo, 'Wait Until Spring, Bandini'
  • 1939 - Viene dato alle stampe 'Ask The Dust'
  • 1940 - Pubblicazione di 'Dago Red', una raccolta di novelle.
  • 1952 - pubblica il romanzo Full of Life da cui sarà tratto un film che riceverà una nomination all'Oscar per la migliore sceneggiatura.
  • 1955 - si ammala di diabete, che lo porterà alla cecità, all'amputazione delle gambe e infine alla morte
  • 1957 - è in Italia e lavora come sceneggiatore per Dino De Laurentiis.
  • 1977 - Fante perde la vista a causa del diabete. Detterà alla moglie l’ultimo romanzo "Dreams from Bunker Hill".
  • 8 maggio 1983 - John Fante muore a 74 anni, lasciando numerosi inediti. In questi anni è al centro di una massiccia riscoperta internazionale.

  • 8 april 1909 - John Fante was born in Denver, Colorado, from a family of Italian immigrants. His father Nick Fante, originary from Torricella Peligna, was a mason; his mother Maria Antrilli, born in Chicago also from Italian parents. His childhood was very poor.
  • John spent his early years in Boulder, attending a Catholic school and later a college in the University of Colorado.
  • 1932 - he moved to Los Angeles where he had a number of different jobs. The American Mercury published one of his stories.
  • 1937 - he marries Joyce Smart, who will bear him four children. He started working as scriptwriter for Hollywood.
  • 1938 - Fante published his first novel, 'Wait Until Spring, Bandini'
  • 1939 - 'Ask The Dust' appeared
  • 1940 - Dago Red, a collection of his short stories '', was published.
  • 1952 - "Full of Life" appeared and the script from it received an Oscar nomination.
  • 1955 - he fell ill with diabetes
  • 1957 came to Italy and worked as scriptwriter for Dino De Laurentiis.
  • 1977 - became blind because of diabetes and also lost his legs later; his last novel "Dreams from Bunker Hill" was dictated to his wife
  • 8 may 1983 - John Fante dies at 74, leaving many unpublished works. In the last few years he is becoming widely recognized as an outstanding 20th century novelist on an international level.
