Una delle cose più interessanti del libro delle "Lettere" di John Fante, sono senza dubbio i commenti di Joyce, la moglie, che gli fu vicino dal 1937 alla morte, avvenuta nel 1983. Ecco, per esempio, cosa scrive a proposito di "Full of life", il romanzo che a Fante diede maggiori soddisfazioni, anche e soprattutto economiche (tradotto nel 1957 da Mondadori e nel 1988 da Fazi editore). "...Dopo un lungo periodo di relativa serenità durante il quale avevamo denaro a sufficienza, anche se non moltissimo", scrive Joyce Fante, "mentre Fante giocava a golf tutti i giorni trascurando il suo lavoro, io mi occupavo dei bambini, all'inizio del 1950 Fante rimase atterrito alla notizia che ero di nuovo incinta. Il nostro terzo figlio era ancora piccolissimo, e ora ce n'era un altro in arrivo. Lui era devastato. Mi aggredì per settimane, gridando oscenità (...) Non fu presente alla nascita di James. In seguito rimase freddo e indifferente a casa, ignorando sia me che il bambino. Entrambi rimanemmo feriti da questo periodo, per tutto il resto della vita matrimoniale, anche se non vi facemmo mai più allusione. Incredibilmente, il quarto figlio portò invece con sé un cambiamento in meglio nelle nostre vite. (...) Sebbene negli anni Cinquanta guadagnò quello che per gli standard odierni equivarrebbe a un milione di dollari (circa due miliardi di lire), Fante non emerse da quegli anni con denaro sufficiente per finanziare la scrittura di un altro romanzo. Ironicamente "Full of life" descrive un'atmosfera domestica solare con un giovane marito amoroso e una moglie che aspetta il primo figlio, l'opposto di quello che era realmente accaduto nella nostra famiglia".

Among the most interesting things in John Fante's "Letters" are surely the comments of his wife Joyce, the writer's companion from 1937 to his death in 1983. Here is, for instance, what she writes with reference to "Full of life", the most rewarding novel, also under an economic perspective, for john Fante (the book was published in Italian by Mondadori in 1957 and by Fazi in 1988). "...After a long, more or less serene period when we had money, though never very much", Joyce Fante writes, "while Fante played golf every day forgetting about his work, and I was looking after the children, in the early 1950 Fante was shocked y the idea that I was pregnant again. Our third son was still very young, and now another was on the way. He was devastated. He kept attacking me for weeks, shouting obscene remarks (...) He was not there when James was born. Afterwards, he was cold and indifferent at home, ignoring both me and the child. We were both deeply wounded by that period, for the rest of our married life, though we never mentioned it again. Incredibly, that fourth child brought a change for the better in our lives. (...) Though in the 1950's he earned what according to today's standards would be one million dollars, Fante did not have by the end of the 1950's money enough to finance writing a new novel. Ironically "Full of life" described a solar atmosphere, with a young affectionate husband and his wife pregnant with their first child, just the opposite of what took place in our family".
