Un documentario tv in Francia per Fante
Sceneggiatura Dreamworks sul secondo libro dell'autore

L'opera di Dan Fante, lo scrittore americano di origini abruzzesi, sembra avere lo stesso destino di quella del padre John: un maggior riconoscimento all'estero prima degli Stati Uniti. In Francia è stato girato un lungo documentario tv sulla sua opera. In Italia Dan Fante ha già un suo pubblico e molti estimatori. Proprio ieri Fernanda Pivano ha firmato un lungo articolo nella pagina culturale del Corriere della Sera. Fante, ha con l'Abruzzo un feeling particolare da quando alla sua prima visita in Italia volle vedere Torricella Peligna, il paesino da cui nonno Nicola partì alla volta degli States nel 1901. Ieri, al telefono dalla sua casa di Santa Monica (California), ha risposto alle domande del Centro.

Come per suo padre, l'Europa apprezza prima degli Usa la sua opera?
«In Francia sono sicuramente abbastanza famoso, ma è in Italia che ho i maggiori apprezzamenti, però anche in Gran Bretagna i miei libri vendono bene».

Com'è nata l'idea del documentario per la tv francese?
«E' iniziato tutto grazie a Christine Bravo, conduce uno show molto seguito in Francia, il sabato pomeriggio. Lei è una mia grande fan e ha dato l'idea a Stéphan Muller, il regista che ha realizzato il video. Stéphan è venuto in California, poi mi ha seguito in Italia nell'ultimo viaggio (a maggio, ndr) e infine siamo andati a Parigi. Il documentario andrà in onda in autunno in Francia».

Spitting off tall buildings, il suo terzo romanzo che ha come protagonista Bruno Dante, aspetta ancora un editore italiano. Nel frattempo cosa scrive?
«Una raccolta di storie brevi che riflettono però, sempre, le mie storie passate. Due o tre racconti, per esempio, trattano di una persona che guida limousine, uno dei miei tanti lavori».

A che punto è il progetto del film sul suo primo romanzo, Chump Change?
«Sono sempre in attesa di Ralph Hemecker (regista di alcuni episodi della serie tv "X-files") ma nel frattempo Michelle Wisler, una signora che lavora per la Dreamworks, ha la sceneggiatura di "Mooch" (pubblicato in Italia con il titolo di "Agganci", ndr) e sta cercando di far recitare la parte principale a George Clooney o Sean Penn».

Quando tornerà in Italia?
«Vorrei tornare al più presto, spero già quest'estate in Abruzzo e a Torricella Peligna».

Scriptwriting by Dreamworks for the author's second book

The works by Dan Fante, an American writer of Abruzzese origin, seem to follow the same destiny as his father John's: an earlier, wider recognition abroad than in the States. In France a long TV documentary was filmed on his production. In Italy Dan Fante already has an established audience of readers and a large number of positive criticism. Just yesterday Fernanda Pivano signed a long article in the culture page of Il Corriere della Sera. Fante has had a special feeling with Abruzzo since when, on his first visit to Italy, he wanted to see Torricella Peligna, the village that his grandfather Nicola left for the States in 1901. Yesterday on the phone from his home in Santa Monica (California), he answered the questions of il Centro.

Are your works being appreciated in Europe earlier than in the USA, just as it happened for your father?
"In France I am surely quite well-known, though it is Italy where I am most appreciated; but in Britain too my books are selling well".

Where did the idea of a documentary for the French TV come from?
"Everything started with Christine Bravo, the conductor of a widely popular French show on Saturday afternoons. She is a great fan of mine and suggested the idea to Stéphan Muller, the director who made the video. Stéphan came to California, then he followed me to Italy on my latest trip (in May) and we finally moved to Paris. The documentary will be shown in France this fall".

Spitting off tall buildings, your third novel with protagonist Bruno Dante, is still waiting for an Italian publisher. What are you writing at the moment being?
"A collection of short stories always reflecting, however, my previous stories. Two or three tales, for instance, deal wit a character who drives limousines, one of my many jobs".

What is the state of the film project for your first novel, Chump Change?
"I am still waiting for Ralph Hemecker (the director of some episodes of TV serial "X-files") but in the meantime Michelle Wisler, a lady working for Dreamworks, has the script of "Mooch" (published in Italy as "Agganci") and is trying to get into the main role George Clooney or Sean Penn".

When will you be coming back to Italy?
"I would like to be back as soon as possible, maybe this summer, to Abruzzo and Torricella Peligna".
