In his coming Biography, Cooper also tells about John Fante's disappointment in visiting his father Nicola's native Torricella in the 1950's: elderly ladies in their shawls, dusty roads, stone houses. 11 February/febbraio 2001 IL CENTRO - - John Fante's "La grande fame", by Paolo Di Vincenzo Italian translation by Francesco Durante, the collection of short stories, some of them unpublished before, is a great document of the life of Italian Americans and their everyday struggles, the poverty, the war, their families. Also stories of kids, mostly inspired by Fante's own children. One of them, Dan Fante, is following in the father's footsteps.
