Terravecchia is the most ancient part of Ortona, the original harbour was just below it. The natural rock offered refuge in case of attack from the sea, and this still before Roman times. The narrow lanes, where just one person at a time can walk, allleading to the central square where San Tommaso is situated, keeping the remains of one of the 12 Apostles since 1258. Here the fishermen came to sell their fish in the evenings for centuries.
