MESSAGGERO -
Traditions for St. John the Baptist / I riti per San Giovanni Battista, by Nino Modugno
The night between 23rd and 24th June is traditionally known as the night of the witches, travelling to their annual congress. In Abruzzo there are many traditions to keep witches away. This is also the night of portents: dew has magical powers, as all waters, and in many places people bathe their body in dew, roll on wet grass, and wait for dawn. Forecasts can be made at midnight with special practices, unmarried girls repeat rites that will ensure finding a husband. And on this night people pick 24 walnuts to make a perfect nocino liquor.
