Abruzzo was the land of three Popes, described in a new Treaccani encyclopaedia: Celestino V, born Pietro Angeleri in the province of Isernia, one of the most interesting Popes in history, buried in Santa Maria di Collemaggio, L'Aquila; Bonifacio IV from Marsica, elected in 608 AD, buried in St Peter's, Rome; Innocenzo VII, 1404 to 1406, born in Sulmona, also buried in St Peter's.
