A number of sites in Abruzzo were on red alert, mostly telecommunications centers like Telespazio, the "Micron" plant in Avezzano, Pescara airport, the Agip oil plant at Ortona, the Gran Sasso laboratory. Flight Pescara-Toronto with 280 passengers had to land in Ireland. The Abruzzese communities in New York and Pittsburgh are very large. All official meetings were suspended.
