Mario Spallone, Avezzano's mayor, was finally able to get a flight in order to be near friend Gorbacev just one ore before the funeral. The friendship developed when Spallone, a former Communist leader, used to visit the USSR and Gorbacev was not yet known.

Danilo Angius, a paragliding instructor, fined yesterday by judge Paola Boiano for organizing years ago a competition that followed a route touching the San Benedetto Grotto, a protected area for Abruzzese vultures. Paragliders say airplanes fly in the area undisturbed, and state their silent sails are not feared by birds.

White wines are already brewing and red grapes are being harvested. In Bolognano Marcello Zaccagnini is developing the «2000 Vineyard project»: a new red from four different Montepulciano clones, at the end of each vineyard line a rosebush of a different color. Roses will get sick before the vineyards, and allow the time to cure the latter. Every year the Zaccagnini winery produces 500,000 bottles, with labels signed by great artists. In Tocco da Casauria another meeting between wine and art in the Filomusi Guelfi canteen with rare, ancient books. In the Pescara Valley culture is frequenly going to the cellar.
